April 11, 2010 - During the warmer months, April through October, residents of Lake County can recycle household hazardous wastes at various sites throughout the county. On Saturday, April 24, the household hazardous waste mobile unit will be stationed at the Cedar Lake Town Hall from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. A variety of hazardous wastes are accepted including aerosols, ammunition, batteries, corrosives, medication, mercury-containing products, oil-based paints, thinners, solvents, pesticides, sharps and waste fuels.

March 21, 2010 - Thinking about cleaning your car since the weather is turning warmer?  The green choice is to go to a commercial car wash because they are required to recycle their water and to manage the soapy toxins. Instead of wasting gallons of water at home and letting soapy run-off enter storm drains, wash your car in a more environmentally friendly way and visit a car wash.

March 7, 2010 - Even the tiniest amounts of bacon grease or cooking oil can clog up your pipes and ultimately back up sewer systems.  Rinsing with a lot of hot water as you pour it down the drain won't help. Once that grease cools down, it solidifies and sticks to pipes.

Earth 911 has these tips how to responsibly dispose, reuse, and even recycle your leftover cooking oil.
  • Absorb small amounts of grease with shredded paper, used kitty litter, or other absorbent materials and then throw it in the trash.
  • Pour oil in a metal container (coffee cans are a popular option). You can throw it out once it solidifies.
  • Some people save bacon grease or used cooking oil to reuse for cooking. If you choose to do that, you might want to strain it and store the grease in the refrigerator.
February 21, 2010 - Looking for a place to recycle your old computer and other electronic devices? After using software to wipe private information from your hard drive, one solution might be to donate your computer to Good Will or to The Salvation Army. Additionally, a variety of companies including Dell, Best Buy, and Office Depot recycle electronics. Also, the Hobart City Barns at 340 South Shelby in Hobart and the Crown Point Street Department at 611 North Jackson Street will accept old electronic devices (including computers and televisions) from Lake County residents Monday through Friday.

February 14, 2010 - In celebration of Valentine's Day or any other holiday, show Mother Earth how much you love her by making green choices:
  •  Reuse materials around the house to make valentines (Good idea for kids giving valentines to friends/classmates.)
  •  Send an e-card to save trees from being cut down. One billion valentines are sent each year...that is a lot of trees!
  • Purchase cards made from recycled paper.
  • Make a donation to an environmental organization or charity on behalf of the person
February 7, 2010 -  Going to a Super Bowl party?  Take a grocery bag to collect your beverage containers in case the host doesn't recycle.  When you leave, take the bag home with you.  At least, your cans and bottles won't go to the trash.

January 31, 2010 - Getting ready to celebrate the Super Bowl?  Instead of using disposable plates and plastic ware, use everyday plates and utensils. Think of how much landfill space you will save. Plastic plates and utensils in a landfill take thousands of years to breakdown. Paper products just waste trees. Instead of cans of pop, buy the 2 liter size, have people drink from reusable cups, again creating less waste. Taking food to a party?  Take it in a Tupperware dish instead of using a disposable pan, saran wrap, or aluminum foil.

January 10, 2010 - Happy New Year!  Did you make any "green" New Year's resolutions?  In 2010, you can pledge to recycle more, turn off electronics when not in use, wash your clothes in cold water, purchase reusable grocery bags, use plant-based cleaning products, stop drinking from plastic bottles and Styrofoam cups, or unplug cell phone chargers.  For more ideas on how to make 2010 a greener year for you and your family, visit www.green.yahoo.com

January 3, 2010 - As we bring in a new year, keep in mind that Christmas cards and wrapping paper are recyclable. Remember to recycle all holiday cards and gift wrap in the Paper Retriever in the church's parking lot.

December 13, 2009 - When buying holiday cards, look on the back of the card or box.  Many cards now are made from recyclable or post-consumer material. Just look for the recycling symbol on the back. Choose to go green during this holiday season.

December 6, 2009 - Have any old Christmas lights that you want to replace?  Home Depot asks you to bring in your old lights (working or not) to be recycled.  They will give you a $3 coupon good towards the purchase of LED Christmas lights which are environmentally friendly because they use less electricity

November 22, 2009 - When deciding on a Christmas tree this season, choose the greener option and get a real tree.  Fake trees are made from plastic and usually end up in a landfill after a few years of use.  Go greener this season with a freshly cut Christmas tree.

November 8, 2009 - 40% of waste in a landfill is paper.  All paper can be recycled.  Please continue to bring in paper to recycle in the green and yellow Paper Retriever in the parking lot.  Our goal is to recycle 2 tons each month.  In the month of September, we recycled 1.79 tons.

November 1, 2009 - You have heard of turning off the water when you brush your teeth.  How about turning off the water when you wash your hands?  Wet your hands, turn off the water while you lather up, and then turn the water back on to rinse.  Follow these steps and you will save gallons of water from being wasted.

October 25, 2009 - When purchasing paper products like toilet paper, Kleenex, and paper towels go green.  You can purchase Marcal: Small Steps.  Their paper products are made from 100% recycled paper.  There goal is to save 100 million trees.  Also, Scotties plants 3 trees for every 1 tree that they use to make their paper products.

October 18, 2009 - Make your water heater work more efficiently—and save you money by wrapping it in an insulating blanket. Insulating kits and directions for safe installation are available at Lowe’s and www lowes.com.

October 11, 2009 - As cold weather approaches, remember to seal up gaps with caulking and weather-stripping. Simple leaks can sap home energy efficiency by 5 to 30% a year.
October 5, 2009 - Recycle your gently-used winter coat by donating to Coats for Kids (and families), a ministry of our church since 2003. Leave your donations in the bin in the Atrium. The giveaway days will be November 7 and November 14.

September 27, 2009 - Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Solid Waste Districts are involved in a cooperative effort to collect household chemicals. The program operates a mobile collection unit which changes locations throughout the three county area. The next collection date in Lake County is this coming Saturday, October 3 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Lake County Fairgrounds. You can bring in aerosols, ammunition, anti-freeze, oil, corrosives, medication, mercury-containing products, pesticides, medical needles, oil-based paints, waste fuels, and flammable liquids. Additionally, the first 120 people to bring in an old gas can will receive an environmentally friendly 2.5 gas can in exchange.

September 20, 2009 - The best way to reduce waste is to find ways to reuse materials or to find new uses for unwanted goods like clothes and household items. Our church provides an avenue for you to donate those gently-used outgrown winter coats to northwest Indiana children and families in need through Coats for Kids (and families.) Place your gently-used coat in the bin in the Atrium.

September 13, 2009 - You can save water and energy by storing a pitcher of tap water in the refrigerator. The pitcher of cold water helps cool the food more efficiently. In addition, when you want a glass of water, there is no need to run the tap to make the water cold enough to drink, and you will not need ice, which requires energy to make. Furthermore, having cold water ready to drink will eliminate the need to keep disposable plastic bottles of water.

September 6, 2009 - Looking for a place to recycle your old computer and other electronic devices? After using software to wipe private information from your hard drive, one solution might be to donate your computer to Good Will or to The Salvation Army. Additionally, a variety of companies including Dell, Best Buy, and Office Depot recycle electronics. Also, the Hobart City Barns at 340 South Shelby in Hobart will accept old electronic devices (including computers and televisions) from Lake County residents Monday – Friday at   8 AM – 2 PM.

August 30, 2009 - Think all portable gas cans are created equal? The old metal gas can in your garage is likely contributing to air and water pollution, and the fumes from the can could be impacting your family's health. Look for a safer new gas cans with these features.
  • an automatic shut-off feature preventing overfilling of power equipment fuel tanks
  • an automatic closing feature that seals the can when it is not being used
  • no secondary venting hole
August 16, 2009 Looking for a last minute summer activity?  Check out the Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.  The exhibit gives you ideas on how to make your home more environmentally friendly.

July 26, 2009 - Did you know that most companies like NIPSCO, cell phones, credit cards and others offer electronic billing and payments?  If just 2% more households switched over to electronic billing and payments, more than 15 million pounds of paper would be saved, preserving more than 181,000 trees.  If you are interested, contact your bank and/or the specific companies.

July 12, 2009 - Want a natural way to clean and unclog drains?  Use vinegar, baking soda, and boiling water to keep your drains odor and clog-free.

July 5, 2009 -   Tired of mosquitoes? Use a lemongrass scented candle, a natural mosquito deterrent.

June 28, 2009 -  Did you know if your turn your thermostat for your air conditioner up a couple of degrees when you leave the house it will save energy?  Try it when you go to bed too.

June 21, 2009 - Did you know you can even be environmentally friendly when it comes to your pets? Many pet shampoos contain phosphates and sulfates that are environmental pollutants. When you wash your dog or cat, those pollutants wash down the drain into our water system. Look for organic shampoos for your pet.

June 14, 2009 -  The next time you buy aluminum foil or plastic baggies at the store, be smart. Purchase the Reynolds aluminum foil that is made from 100% recycled aluminum. Buy the Ziploc Evolve baggies, which are made with wind energy and use 25% less plastic.

June 7, 2009 - About 1 billion trees worth of paper is thrown away every year in the United States. Please collect your paper at home and at work. Drop off the paper in the yellow and green Paper Retriever in the parking lot. Not only will you be helping our environment, you will be raising money for our church.

May 31, 2009 - As the weather gets warmer and you use air conditioning, make sure to turn up the temperature 2 degrees when leaving the house.  This will prevent the air running and wasting energy when you are not at home. This practice will also save money on your electric bill.

May 24, 2009 - Many of us drink beverages from plastic bottles.  Every single plastic bottle can be recycled; however, sadly only 25% of plastic bottles actually are recycled.  If you drink from a plastic bottle please recycle it instead of throwing it away.  Remember too if you are having a Memorial Day picnic, use one garbage can as a recycling bin for cans and bottles.

May 17, 2009 - Do you have extra paint cans around the house, and you don't know what to do with them?  Try donating the left over paint to a charity like Habitat for Humanity. If you can't reuse it, then search Earth911.com to see if you can recycle it. Otherwise, you might need to throw dried paint in the trash if it's not against the law in your community. Remove the lid from a latex paint can and let it dry out until it's completely hard. Take any oil-based paints directly to your household hazardous waste center.

May 10, 2009 - MUMC collect 2.16 tons of paper to be recycled during the month of April. This is the first time in 7 months that we reached the required goal of 2 tons.  Excellent job!  Let's try to reach our goal again in May.  Continue collecting that paper from work, family, neighbors, and friends.

May 3, 2009 - Now that the weather is nicer, please continue to drop off the paper you have at home and at work in the Paper Retriever. We need to collect at least 2 tons each month.

April 26, 2009 - Did you know that you use around 2,200 paper napkins each year?  If Americans would use one less napkin at each meal, 1 billion pounds of napkins would be saved from landfills each year not to mention the number of trees saved.  The next time you eat don't grab a handful of napkins.  Grab 1 or 2, and let's start saving paper.

April 19, 2009 - Wednesday, April 22 is Earth Day. Celebrate Earth by choosing an activity that is Earth-friendly. Instead of watching TV, read a book or visit a park. March 29, 2009 - An easy way to clean green is to turn the dial on your washing machine to cold. Most loads do not need hot water, and 90% of the energy used by washing machines goes into heating. Remember the higher the water temperature, the higher the cost to you and the planet.

Green Tip Extra - On Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 PM, join many on our planet in celebrating an hour-a global event in which millions of people will turn out their lights to make a statement of concern about our planet and climate change. Sponsored by World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour got started just two years ago and is now the largest event of its kind in the world.  Last year, more than 50 million participated and the lights went out at the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate.

March 22, 2009 -   When you plan your spring cleaning, remember to clean your house with environmental friendly cleaning products. Brands like Method, Green Works, and Seventh Generation are just a few plant-based, non-toxin cleaning products available at grocery stores, Walgreen’s, Target and other stores. Keep your house and the environment clean and toxin free.

March 15, 2009 - Thinking about cleaning your car since the weather is turning warmer?  The green choice is to go to a commercial car wash because they are required to recycle their water and to manage the soapy toxins. Instead of wasting gallons of water at home and letting soapy run-off enter storm drains, wash your car in a more environmentally friendly way and visit a car wash.

August 31, 2008 - Drink coffee??  Americans throw away 25,000,000,000 Styrofoam coffee cups every year.  Instead of using Styrofoam cups or paper cups, create less garbage and use a reusable coffee cup at home or work.  If you are a frequent Starbucks drinker, take a thermos and they will fill that up instead of giving you a disposable cup.
