Think Green! Choose Green! Protecting and conserving the Earth is extremely important. At Merrillville United Methodist Church, our goal is to educate others on how to impact the planet in a more positive way. We cannot pass the blame to someone else, we are ALL responsible for the current status of the planet. However, we can all take simple steps everyday to help make a positive difference. Read from the list below for ways you can “Go Greener.”

1. Read the “Green Tip of the Week” in the church bulletin, on the projector screen, or website. Share it with at least one person during the week, and ask them to continue the chain and pass it on to one person they know.

2. Recycle your batteries and paper at church in the bins provided.

  • Paper includes: magazines, newspapers, junk mail, catalogs, office paper, computer paper, construction paper, folder, envelopes, post-it notes, art paper, wrapping paper, spiral notebooks, and books (please remove cover and binder). You can bring any of the papers products above from home and deposit it into the bin.
  • Batteries include any batteries small enough to fit into the bin.

3. Visit green websites for information: (Check out these suggested websites)

4. Recycle at home, school, work, and everywhere!!!! Place a recycle bin next to the trash can. No bin, make one. Use a box, bag, or any other creative idea. Encourage others to recycle. If your district, township city, or town does not provide a recycling program, contact your mayor’s or your trustee's office and request that they do something about it. If you live in Lake county, contact the Lake County Solid Waste Management for information. If you live in Porter County, contact the Waste Management for information.

5. Contact local and state representatives and voice your opinions and concerns.

6. Visit www.in.gov/recycle and measure your carbon “footprint” on the Earth.

7. Reduce the amount of waste you create.

  • Minimize the amount of disposable items you use  such as Styrofoam cups/containers, plastic utensils, paper/plastic/Styrofoam plates, plastic water bottles, etc.)
  • Instead use reusable material.

8. Purchase a book or visit the library and read about various things you can do to lessen your impact.

9. Refuse the use of plastic bags. Purchase cloth bags at almost any grocery store or drug store.

10. Use environmentally friendly cleaning products (plant-based).

  • Method
  • Seventh Generations
  • Green Works (by Clorox)
  • Pure & Natural

11. Challenge your local businesses and schools to go green. Contact them, and ask them if they recycle and practice other enviromentally sound procedures.
